Padua Franciscan High School hosted twenty-seven schools with a total of 270 works of art in their annual art show. Three Metro Catholic School students received awards: Trinh Doan, 2nd place; Denzel Henry, Honorable Mention and Dwayne Shields, Honorable Mention. Congratulations to these young artists and to Mrs. Andrews, our excellent art teacher.
PEACE-ING TOGETHER THE ARTS COMMUNITY IN OUR SCHOOL NEIGHBORHOOD
Metro Catholic's 3rd and 4th graders joined area schools in creating costumes for the Cleveland "Day of the Dead" parade. Urban Community School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel joined the parade from 6205 Detroit Avenue to La Sagrada Familia.

Sixth Graders Celebrate Day of the Dead
Day of the Dead, November 2, is a very important feast in the life of Hispanics, especially the people of Mexican heritage, or those that have been influenced by the different indigenous cultures of Latin America. Day of the Dead is born out of the popular Christian religious backgrounds and reveals the role that death plays in life and that life plays in death. In preparation for the Day of the Dead, we have spent time in sharing and celebrating the lives of our relatives and their importance in our lives today. We have shared stories, pictures, and beautiful prayers in preparation for celebrating the thought that life and death are interwoven. The celebration of three days has resurrection significance as well as the significance of past events, communion and community. It is all a way of keeping our loved ones under the watchful eyes of God and present in our lives. Thank you again from all who help us on the very special day.

2008-2009 Cleveland Indians High Achiever Program Assembly
|
| Back row: Christopher Garber, Eric Wedge. Front row: Aaron Samkas, Michael Sebek, Sadoke Ciza, Regina Alvarado, Madeleine Lochan. ( Rebecca Adcox was not present) |
The gym of the Stephen campus was the scene of great excitement on Friday, September 19. The KETCHUP MASCOT, SLIDER AND ERIC WEDGE of the Cleveland Indians treated the students of that campus to a presentation. Metro Catholic was one of only three schools in all of Cleveland to be chosen for such a special event.
The Cleveland Indians have a special program called CLEVELAND INDIANS HIGH ACHIEVERS AWARDS. All students in the greater Cleveland area are invited to register on line for participation in this program, which is meant to encourage student success and achievement in school. Nearly 2000 schools participated and Metro Catholic had the most number of students register to take part! Hence, the students of our school were given the privilege of being part of this assembly.
After a rousing welcome for Slider, Ketchup and Eric Wedge and expressions of excitement in support of the Indians the students settled down to listen to Eric’s message. He spoke of the importance of a good education in his own life, in the life of his players and in the lives of the young people in front of him. He encouraged the students to make the most of their time in school and to use their intelligence and talents to the max! Students were allowed to ask questions of Mr. Wedge. These ranged from queries about his family to his preparation for being a manager and which team was the most challenging for the Indians to face.
Seven students were given special recognition because of the number of points they attained in this High Achievers Program:
Michael Sebek, Aaron Samkas, Sadoke Ciza, Regina Alvarado, Christopher Garber, Madeleine Lochan and Rebecca Adcox, were given special certificates and had their pictures taken with our special guests.
We are confident that from this exciting and most enjoyable assembly will come renewed enthusiasm and resolutions for academic achievement among our students!

Club Invention Explores Creative Skills
Each Wednesday afternoon for the past six weeks a group of excited fifth and sixth grade students met in the art room to test their creative skills in new ways. These young people belong to a special science club, Club Invention. With limited materials, the students were asked to solve problems involving friction, gravity and the laws of motion. From participating in relay races, playing a new game called Shuffle Bowling, or creating a miniature golf course, the students learned to work together to see how science principles operate in everyday life. One student summarized her participation in Club Invention by saying that she learned to solve problems "by learning and doing in a fun way." During the last two weeks the students will explore the principles of air pressure and magnetism in creative ways.
We are grateful to the Office of Catholic Education of the Diocese of Cleveland for obtaining a grant to make this special after school activity possible.
Thanks go also to Sister Mary Therese Grady for being the adult leader of this energetic and creative group.

Grade 5 Learns Yoga
Namaste! This greeting is exchanged each Tuesday morning between fifty fifth graders and Mr. Young, a teacher of yoga. Under his direction and guidance, students are helped to unite their body, mind, alignment, meditation and consciousness. Assuming different physical poses, students focus their full attention. They learn to project what is in their minds and hearts through their bodies thus achieving a healthy integration that is the basis of all honest living. Namaste! The light in me greets the light in you.!
Gardening Outreach
Sister Mary Jane Vovk, SND and the school gardening club received the following note from Pastor White of Bethany Presbyterian Church:
Dear Sister Mary Jane,
You and your fellow gardeners are awesome people! We are so appreciative of your generosity to our Friday Community Meal Program. Summer means fresh vegetables and lots of sunshine and thanks to you and your young people we have them. Please convey our thanks to your group.
Metro Catholic is proud of and grateful to all teachers, parents and students who nurtured the garden so that we can share the goods of the earth with those in need.
