RECENT ACTIVITIES IN GRADE 6
"The Nativity Story"
As part of their preparation for Christmas, sixth grade students all had the opportunity to view "The Nativity Story" at Ridgepark Square Cinemas. The students gave the movie rave reviews and are very grateful to Tom and Sandy Sullivan who made this experience possible.
Asian Christmas Customs
December activities also included the students researching, writing and typing, with special layout designs, reports on Asian Christmas traditions intergrating Language, Social Studies and Computer classes.
Power of the Pencil
A pilot program related to Power of the Pen, is starting in grade 6 as the students begin creative writing assignments. Ms. Rowland, grade 6 teacher, attended a workshop in December to learn about this new program.
Recent writing activities in grade 6 included writing poems. Here are some great examples of the
results.

Sixth Graders Connect with Maryknoll Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Ms. Denise Rowland, sixth grade teacher, and her students are busy composing letters to the children at Maryknoll Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Metro students have also created an "American Culture" collage that will be sent to the center, hoping to receive one in exchange.
Most of the students who come to the study center live in the orphanage around the corner. Cambodia, the poorest country in the world, is slowly restoring its culture since the Khmer Rouge destruction in the 1970's.
The goal for our sixth grade students is to learn more about Southeast Asia, especially the country of Cambodia, and to help the children at the Center with their English. Learning English is a necessary tool to help pull the children up and out of lives of poverty. Our students are interested in helping them with paper and books, also.
Our November Newsletter has some delightful pictures of this activity.
