The First Graders in Room 205 love poetry. In the beginning of the year, the children made poetry folders. Their first poems were repetitive and included sight words, so they were reading the first week of school. They have also read many other poems and discussed what the poet was trying to say. Some of the poems were about bugs, Martin Luther King, and Thanksgiving.
In January the first graders created modified Cinquain poems. They used the following form for their poems:
Line 1: One word title
Line 2: Two descriptive words
Line 3: Three words that express action
Line 4: Four words that express feelings
Line 5: One word synonym for the title
They enjoy reading poetry as well as creating their own poems!
