Metro Students Support Water Project for Sumbuk, India

Student Government in cooperation with the Metro's Advent Committee are sponsoring activities to generate money for the Water Project in Sumbuk, India where the Sisters of Notre Dame operate Notre Dame School, a Health Center and a Women's shelter.

UPDATE! Metro Students collected over $800 during Advent. This is way beyond our expectation and goal!

Currently these three ministries as well as 22 other families in the area share one water source. Sumbuk gets water from a hilltop about one mile distance and at a height of 6000 feet. The connections are very temporary. Many other people also use this same water source and so water is a precious comodity. In consultation with the people who share the water source, Sister Sreeja in India proposed the following project:

  • Make a concrete source tank at the origin of the water at the top of the hill.
  • Bring the water down to 5000 feet where a distribution tank can collect the water through the use of metal pipes buried deep into the ground.
  • One pipe line would go directly to the compound where the school, Health Center, Women's Center and 22 other families will benefit from clean water.
  • The people of Sumbuk will help support the project as they are able.

The school of 500 is in a beautiful area of north India in the Himalaya Mountains by two Sisters of Notre Dame from India. Metro Catholic and Notre Dame School share a founding date of 1988!

Friends of Metro Catholic who would like to contribute to the Water Project may write checks payable to Metro Catholic School and be sent to Metro Catholic School, 1910 West 54th Street, Cleveland, OH 44102. Please designate the gift for the Water Project.

Humphrey Society Honors Outstanding Donors to Metro Catholic

The Patience and George Humphrey Society was created to recognize the sustaining support of Metro Catholic School by individuals, foundations, and corporations who share our mission to empower the dreams of young people within Cleveland's inner-city.

Patience and George Humphrey
We honor the outstanding generosity and commitment of Patience and George Humphrey to Metro Catholic School with the inauguration of our giving society in their name and with the first Humphrey Awards. George and Patience have been true friends of our school. Since 1997 they have contributed countless hours and energy to the creation of the 800 Society and hosted numerous annual fundraising events in support of the group. They sought to close the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating students through donations to the 800 Society. Their passionate belief in the mission of Metro Catholic was demonstrated by their successful attempts to share the Metro story with the Cleveland community where their leadership is legendary. They believed in us so we could believe even more in our mission. We are deeply grateful to Patience and George for their remarkable philanthropy and we thank them for their vision, inspiration and support over these many years.

Thomas and Sandra Sullivan
Tom and Sandy Sullivan are well known for their long history of outstanding philanthropy in greater Cleveland. Metro Catholic School has been most fortunate to be the recipient of their incredible generosity and active support. They provided encouragement to our school for undertaking a capital campaign and made an extraordinary leadership gift to the campaign. believe in the mission of Metro Catholic as it tries to break the cycle of poverty for Cleveland children through Catholic education. It is because of generous hearts like those of Tom and Sandy Sullivan that we are able to empower the dreams of our students. We are humbled by their assistance and honor them with the Humphrey Award.

The Sisters of Notre Dame
The Sisters of Notre Dame began their ministry to the people of Cleveland in 1874. Drawing upon their rich educational heritage, three Sisters of Notre Dame principals merged three inner city parish schools in 1988 in response to the need for a new model of urban Catholic education. The twenty-two year success of Metro Catholic is largely possible because of the leadership, financial support, spirituality, and presence of at least 12 Sisters of Notre Dame in the school every year. It is an unprecedented commitment and we are most appreciative. Sr. Cecilia Liberatore, SND, Chardon Provincial Leader, will accept the Humphrey Award on behalf of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Tom and Ginny Jeckering
Tom and Ginny Jeckering have been loyal supporters of Metro Catholic School for many years. It is Tom's personal preference to make annual donations to the school without formal recognition. We are extremely grateful to him today for permitting us to finally thank him publicly with the Humphrey Award. The extent of the Jeckering's philanthropy to Metro Catholic is extraordinary. We have been able to maintain a high level of tuition assistance for our many families living in poverty largely because of Tom and Ginny's overwhelmingly generous commitment and their belief in the value of Catholic education. We say thank you aloud for their many years of giving quietly.

Richard Osborne
Rick Osborne has been a treasured, long time friend of Metro Catholic School. We greatly appreciate Rick's leadership as Chairman of our Children in the City Capital Campaign and his work to help us get closer to our 2.5 million dollar goal. At the blessing and dedication of our model green classroom last October, Rick surprised the school with a very significant donation to the Campaign by pulling a check from his shirt pocket and handing it over to a stunned Sister Anne Maline. This is characteristic of Rick’s love for our work and his support for the Metro Catholic mission. Perhaps he was also inspired by the Sixth Grade Green Classroom Committee presentations and their stewardship of our environment. We are profoundly grateful to Rick Osborne.

Celebrating Hopes and Dreams: Bishop Gries visits Metro Catholic

As we continue to weave hopes and dreams into celebrations we are privileged and proud to report a very special event which occurred on Friday, October 17th. Bishop Roger Gries joined Father David Fallon and Father Robert Begin in celebrating a special Mass at the Stephen Campus. Special guests who are supporters of Metro Catholic School joined students, faculty, and staff members of that campus to praise our good God for caring for us. We all asked for insight and courage to care for our environment, God's great gift to us. Our choir and handbell choir added to the liturgical celebration with special music. Of course, all cultures in our school were represented in procession, in dress, and in song. Bishop Gries often reminded us in his homily that GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME.

After Liturgy the Bishop and guests were escorted to our newly renovated 'green classroom.' After the special blessing of this special room the members of the 6th grade 'green committee' explained to the guests the advantages of the features of our 'green room' to students and to the environment. The entire day was certainly proof that GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME.

Special Notes

The following notes of appreciation were received after the visit of Bishop Gries:

Dear Sister Anne,

Congratulations to the Metro Catholic students, to you, and to your faculty and staff for today's wonderful celebration! An event like this, carried out so meaningfully, involves much planning, preparation and working with the students.

First of all, I was impressed with the participation and singing in the liturgy. The attention and behavior of the students made this a very prayerful experience for all those present. The responses to Bishop Griess showed how effective classroom instruction has been in teaching the children to care for our environment. I loved the great energy of the choir that gave the message clearly that today was a special celebration! What a beautiful addition the handbell players gave to the music.

The student representatives of the school who greeted the guests as we approached the "green" classroom were friendly and welcoming. How rich Metro Catholic is in your diversity of cultures.

Above all, I was moved by the "Green Committee." Each student who spoke about the unique features of the environmentally friendly classroom was knowledgeable and articulate. It is somewhat awesome to speak (without notes) to an unfamiliar audience of adults. Special congratulations to each! Their love for Metro Catholic and their pride in their school was evident.

It is my prayer that the Miracle of 54th Street continues to be a beacon of hope for the students, their parents, and the neighborhood.

Sincerely,

Sr. M. Jean Hoelke, SND

Director of Ministries

Dear Sister Anne,

It was a great honor for me to share the special blessing of the "Green Room" with you and your wonderful students. The way they participated at Mass and conducted themselves throughout was a tribute to Catholic Education. You and your faculty must be very proud of these young people.

The "Green Committee" did an excellent job in explaining the many features of this unique room. Please let them know how much I appreciated their presentations, the gifts, and just the time being with you all. As you must be able to tell, I love Metro Catholic School! God bless!

With love and prayers,

(Most Rev.) Roger W. Griess, OSB

Auxilary Bishop of Cleveland

Cleveland Indians High Achiever Program Assembly

Back row: Christopher Garber, Eric WedgeFront row:  Aaron Samkas, Michael Sebek, Sadoke Ciza, Regina Alvarado, Madeleine Lochan. ( Rebecca Adcox was not present)

The gym of the Stephen campus was the scene of great excitement on Friday, September 19. The KETCHUP MASCOT, SLIDER AND ERIC WEDGE of the Cleveland Indians treated the students of that campus to a presentation. Metro Catholic was one of only three schools in all of Cleveland to be chosen for such a special event.

The Cleveland Indians have a special program called CLEVELAND INDIANS HIGH ACHIEVERS AWARDS. All students in the greater Cleveland area are invited to register on line for participation in this program, which is meant to encourage student success and achievement in school. Nearly 2000 schools participated and Metro Catholic had the most number of students register to take part! Hence, the students of our school were given the privilege of being part of this assembly.

After a rousing welcome for Slider, Ketchup and Eric Wedge and expressions of excitement in support of the Indians the students settled down to listen to Eric’s message. He spoke of the importance of a good education in his own life, in the life of his players and in the lives of the young people in front of him. He encouraged the students to make the most of their time in school and to use their intelligence and talents to the max! Students were allowed to ask questions of Mr. Wedge. These ranged from queries about his family to his preparation for being a manager and which team was the most challenging for the Indians to face.

Seven students were given special recognition because of the number of points they attained in this High Achievers Program:

Michael Sebek, Aaron Samkas, Sadoke Ciza, Regina Alvarado, Christopher Garber, Madeleine Lochan and Rebecca Adcox, were given special certificates and had their pictures taken with our special guests.

We are confident that from this exciting and most enjoyable assembly will come renewed enthusiasm and resolutions for academic achievement among our students!

Bishop Lennon Celebrates with Metro Catholic

Metro Catholic School officially began its 20th Anniversary celebrations with Mass offered by Bishop Richard G. Lennon October 17, 2007 at St. Stephen Church. Formed by the merging of St. Boniface, St. Michael and St. Stephen grade schools, Metro Catholic was one of the first efforts in the Diocese of Cleveland to consolidate resources in order to provide continuing Catholic education for the children of the city.

Predicted to last only three years. today, with an enrollment of approximately 600 students, Metro Catholic celebrates 20 years of education and service as a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. This "Miracle on 54th Street" continues as a beacon of hope for the students and families of the near west side of Cleveland.

Students, faculty and staff were joined  by the three Sisters of Notre Dame who founded Metro Catholic School: Sister Grace Mary Corbett, Sister Regina Davala and Sister Mary Virginia Reeseing. Additional special guests included diocesan officials, Matt Zone, Ward 17 Councilman, pastors, persons significant in establishing Metro Catholic School and members of the Metro Catholic Advisory Board.

Beacon Street Performs at Metro Catholic

Metro Catholic is often known as "The United Nations on West 54th Street." One goal in our Improvement Plan reflects this reality: To celebrate our cultural and religious diversity while maintaining a strong Catholic identity. That's why Beacon Street was invited to our school. Its mission is to proclaim the Gospel using the performing arts. Bob Kloos, Artistic Director and talented performer, presented a program on diversity in each building. The audiences were not only entertained and engaged through stories, songs, rap, mime, poetry and movement, but also inspired and challenged to live the message found in each one.

Experiencing the ministry of Beacon Street was a great way to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. It also highlighted who we are as Metro Catholic School and what we believe. We are grateful to the Sisters of Notre Dame for funding this program through the Mission and Ministry Grant.

20th Anniversary Family Fun Night

Thank you to all our families who attended our Family Fun Night! We had over 200 people dancing, eating, crafting and more. Door prizes were given away every 20 minutes for children. At 8:00 we picked our adult door prize winnerand our 50/50 Raffle winner. Two winners received gift baskets of assorted items donated from Hard Rock Cafe. The winner of our 50/50 donated a large portion of her winnings back to the school. Thank you to Joann Huge! We held a scrapbook page contest and gave prizes in six different categories. Sr. Anne Maline was the DJ - and did a wonderful job.

Thanks to the Parent Advisory Committee for planning such a spectacular night.

International Day of Peace

On Friday, September 28, Metro Catholic paused to observe a time of prayer for PEACE in ourselves, our school, our city, our world. The prayers reflected our multicultural student body.

  • African drumming
  • Prayers for peace in languages our children speak
  • Prayers for peace from various faith traditions and cultures.

Metro Catholic is a microcosm of our world.
Metro Catholic is proof that there can be PEACE

Students' Reflections on Peace

Imagine a World...

Where people of every religion were accepted by
other beliefs and faiths
Without hatred and violence
Where people did not fight for power
Where people talk about love and freedom
That cares for its beauty and does not destroy it
That dreams of a place like Heaven and makes it
happen on Earth.

7:0 Undefeated 2006-2007 Season

Metro Catholic’s Girls' 5th Grade Basketball Team and The Coach That Led Them To an Undefeated Season

Practices every Monday and Friday for about an hour or more; a game every weekend with days and times ranging from Saturday at 9:30am to Sunday afternoons; these are examples of the days and hours of devotion that has led this team of 5th grade girls to a victorious season. This was an exciting season. Most of the girls on the team are returning players from their 4th grade year.  Coach Turner was new to the team but not to the commitment of mentoring young athletes.

Parents and family alike gathered during their free time to support and cheer on 10 and 11 year old girls during fun and challenging games. The girls displayed wonderful sportsmanship while Coach Turner and Assistant Coach Chris exemplified great leadership. Another important asset to the team was Mrs. Abernathy, who acted as the Team Mom by attending every practice and game, watching after the players and being available should any of the girls have concerns. This TEAM of students, coaches, and family members are a wonderful model of Metro Catholic’s foundation.

Fifth grade girls' undefeated basketball team. CONGRATULATIONS!

OSU Welcomes Metro 8th Graders

Where do you want to be five years from now? Fourteen eighth graders explored this question on a Career Decision Tour at Ohio State University. The program was sponsored by the Cuyahoga County 4-H Program and the Cuyahoga County Farm Bureau. Students arrived on campus for a brief welcome at the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences where they learned about the numerous careers related to food. Throughout the day students were able to participate in two breakout sessions. In these sessions students explored careers in business management, engineering, nutrition and food safety and medical technologies. Students met with professors and college students who discussed what it takes to be successful and the journey they are on to reach their career goals. Each of these eighth grade students now has a clearer picture of themselves and where they will be five years from now.

Sixth Grade Social Studies Celebrates the Year of the Pig

This year's cultural focus at Metro Catholic has been the celebration of our Asian friends and families. In sixth grade Social Studies we have studied the history of the areas of Southwest, Central, South, East, and Southeast Asia. In both Art and Social Studies we have created a number of works of art including lanterns, Zodiac Symbols, fish prints, large Samurai Warrior paintings, tapestries of India and more.

Of all the Chinese festivals celebrated throughout the year, Chinese New Year, or Lunar New Year, is the most important and spectacular. This celebration is a family affair: a time of new beginnings; a time of reunion and thanksgiving. Families like to welcome the new year with a clean slate. Houses are cleaned from top to bottom to remove all traces of the old year and its misfortunes and to bring good luck for the coming year. Gates are repainted and windows are washed until they shine. Bills are paid and debts are settled. Family members gather at each other's homes for visits and to share meals.

As a grade level we are a "family" of diverse but united cultures. On February 20 we gathered together as a family and celebrated our present and our pasts with a "picnic" in the third floor hall. We too are seeking new beginnings in our effort and our friendships.

Thank you from the whole sixth grade for all the help and support that made this celebration possible.
